Macintosh File System (MFS) is a volume (or disk file system) format created by Apple Computer to store files on 400 KB floppy disks. MFS was introduced in January 1984 on the original Apple Macintosh computer.
MFS is characterized by the introduction of resource ranges for storing structured data, as well as storing metadata, which are necessary to support the Mac OS graphical user interface. MFS allows file names up to 255 characters, although Finder does not allow users to create names longer than 63 characters (31 characters in later versions). MFS is called a flat file system because it does not support a directory hierarchy.
Folders exist as a concept on the original MFS-based Macintosh, but they work very differently than on modern systems. They are visible in the Finder windows, but not in the open and save dialogs. There is always an empty folder on the volume. If this is changed in any way (for example, by adding or renaming files), a new empty folder will appear, which you can use to create new folders. MFS stores weight list of files and directory information in one file. The Finder creates the illusion of folders by saving all files as pairs of directory descriptors and file descriptors. To display the contents of a specific folder, MFS searches the directory for all files in this descriptor. No need to search for a separate directory listing file.

Is Apfs better than Mac OS Journaled?
Newer MacOS installations should use APFS by default. If you format an external drive, APFS is the fastest and best option for most users. Mac OS Extended (or HFS +) is still a good option for older drives, but only if you want to use it with a Mac or for Time Machine backups.
The Macintosh file system does not support volumes larger than 20 MB or approximately 1,400 files. Despite the fact that by today's standards this is not enough, at the time it seemed very important compared to the 400 KB Macintosh floppy drive.
What is the File Manager in Mac OS called?
Finder is a standard file manager and graphical user interface used on all Macintosh operating systems. Described in his Info window as the Macintosh Desktop Experience, he is responsible for running other applications and for general user management of files, hard drives, and network volumes.Mac Os Hdd Format

Apple introduced the hierarchical file system to replace MFS in September 1985. On Mac OS 7.6.1, Apple removed write support for MFS volumes, [1] , and on Mac OS 8.0, support for MFS volumes was completely removed. Although macOS does not have native MFS support, an example of an Apple VFS plug-in called MFSLives provides read-only access to MFS volumes.
